Statement Piece

I did a post a while back on the art I currently have in my living room (see here). I had mentioned that I had been perusing Minted.com for some art. I wound up going with something cheap for now from Hobby Lobby, but it seems to lack ‘oomph’ for me.

It works for now, but I’m not in love. I saw the below on a blog called ‘Love Grows Wild’. She had ordered a HUGE print of one of my favorite photographs from Minted. She suspended the print from chains from her ceiling. Intense.

It inspired me to possibly do something different with my wall. I’m thinking of mirroring her idea with the large black and white print.

However, I’m also really digging something busier with color like this one:

I’m not planning on doing anything for a while with this project. But it’s good to have a game plan. I think a huge statement piece is just what the wall needs.

The Rug Has Landed!

It’s finally happened! I got a rug! You guys, you have NO idea how long I have waited to find the perfect rug! I have envisioned this bad boy for years and finally just went for it.

(Please ignore my pillow situation on the big sofa–it needs help).

It’s a VERY heavy duty jute rug that I found on Overstock.com. It looks like it is now unfortunately out of stock. But I would definitely recommend it if it ever comes back. So far, it’s been great quality and hasn’t bunched up at all (a big concern of mine). I think it pulled the room together a ton. I know there is some back and forth on whether or not you should layer rugs over carpet. But in this room, I feel like it really needed something. Eventually, I’m going to get a cowhide rug to layer over it. Loving it! Now if I can only get some new couches…..

French Linen or Battleship Gray?

Good afternoon lovelies!

So I finally pulled the trigger. I have had the same kitchen table since college. It was actually the table that my parents had in their kitchen when I was a kid. It has sentimental value, of course. But I have never been a huge fan of the color/style. I had decided that I was going to have my brother build me a farmhouse table for the space instead. I even downloaded the plans and had started picking out stain shades. But once I got into the process, I kept going back to this old, shot-out table. It really does mean a lot to me to have this table that I spent so much of my childhood sitting at. After thinking about it, I decided to give it another shot. I wanted to give it an update and finally decided on painting it with French Linen Annie Sloan Chalk Paint.

I found a retailer that is near me and picked up a quart and a small can of the clear wax. The store I went to was an absolutely adorable place called ‘Chalk It Up’ in Norcross. Check them out: Chalk It Up.

Below is a before shot:

You can see it was an almost yellow stain on there–not the style I had envisioned for my home. The French Linen is an almost taupe-y vintage style color that I immediately fell in love with.

This is after the first coat. After getting this one on, I was starting to get nervous. More than vintage taupe, it was coming out (as my sweet husband put it) battleship gray. Awesome. IMG_4379.jpg

After two coats, my furniture was still obstinately gray. I was freaking out now. Finally, after 3 coats, it started to look more like I envisioned.

Here is the finished product:

It’s still grayer than I envisioned, but I’m thinking some of that is due to the hideous green paint color currently occupying my walls. Hopefully soon, we can have a chance to get a new color in there.

My project for this week is to switch out the light fixture above the table to this beauty:

It’s from World Market and is a steal. The plan is to paint the room a more neutral color, get a black sideboard with some cool art above, switch out the light fixture, get a bench for one side of the table and move two chairs to the ends of the table, get a sheepskin rug for the bench, and possibly get a kilim rug for under the table. Yea. I’ve got a long way to go. But, at least this is a step in the right direction.

By the way, I wound up hanging my new print next the back door. Check it out!

Just imagine how cool this will look once the room is painted!
